Ending the Silence - NAMI Cook County North Suburban - Main Office

Ending The Silence, a 50-minute presentation for middle and high school students to help them understand mental illness. The program teaches them common warning signs and when, where and how to get help for themselves or for their friends. During the presentation, they hear the reality of what living with a mental health condition is like directly from a young adult with lived experience.

- NAMI Family to Family: Provides an 8-session educational program for family, significant others, and friends of people living with mental illness. Program is also offered in Spanish.

- NAMI Peer to Peer: Provides an 8-week educational program for adults with mental health conditions who are looking to better understand themselves and their recovery. Program is also offered in Spanish.

- NAMI Basics: Provides a 6-week education program for parents and family caregivers of children and teens who are experiencing symptoms of a mental illness or who have already been diagnosed. Program is offered in a group setting so that attendees can connect with others face-to-face.

- NAMI Ending the Silence: Provides a presentation for middle and high school students. Symptoms of mental health conditions and resources to access when they are noted in peers and family members are provided. A recovery speaker shares their story. Students are asked to take action in ending the stigma regarding mental illness.

Offers several different mental health education programs.

- Family-To-Family: Provides a free, 12-week course for family caregivers of individuals with severe mental illness. The course is taught by trained family members. All instruction and course materials are free to class participants.

- Course includes: Current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders.

- Up-to-date information about medications, side effects, and strategies for medication adherence.

- Current research related to the biology of brain disorders and the evidence-based, most effective treatments to promote recovery.

- Gaining sympathy by understanding the subjective, lived experience of a person with mental illness.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSES | NORTH CENTRAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SYSTEMS

Offers an 8-hour course that teaches how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training provides the skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing and mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Also offers a course designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Topics include depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Free 8-session class taught by trained NAMI members. The Family to Family curriculum focuses on:

- Schizophrenia.

- Bipolar disorder (manic depression).

- Clinical depression.

- Panic disorder.

- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

The course discusses the clinical treatment of these illnesses and teaches the knowledge and skills that family members need to cope more effectively. Classes are offered twice a year.

NAMI Champaign County also provides monthly educational presentations and can provide an in-service for teachers and staff to help identify the symptoms of mental illness in children.
